by Daisy SunshineNovember 7, 2018

As November is finally here, Malaysia’s longest-running creative arts festival Urbanscapes 2018 has a lot more in store for fans nationwide with their latest announcement of their additional line-up! From international acts to more satellite shows featuring the best of the country in poetry, music, exhibitions, outdoor installations, to talks, markets, and community programmes. , you’ll surely be awestruck over the number of events to attend!

The 16th edition of the Urbanscapes festival will be featuring over 98 music acts and 95 artist collectives, at 9 venues all over KL in the span of three weekends throughout this festive month! So what else is in store for you? Well, read on to find out!

1. Unlimited Grooves Festival Pre-party featuring Alvvays and Zee Avi!

As if the line-up couldn’t get any more exciting, Toronto-based indie pop group Alvvays and our very own Bornean maverick Zee Avi will be kicking off the month-long party on the 3rd of November 2018 at the Chin Woo Stadium!

unnamedAlvvays will be touching down onto Malaysian shores for the first time; with sugary, heart-tugging melodies and strum-’n-thrummers In Undertow (heheh!).

Taking the international indie scene by storm, Alvvays presented the world with their very first self-titled album “Alvvays” in 2014, featuring cult-favorite singles “Adult Diversion”, “Marry Me Archie” and “Next Of Kin”!

Even more than its breakout self-titled predecessor, Alvvays’ sophomore album, ‘Antisocialites‘ garnered even more attention for its back-to-back sharp, punchy rock and swooning dream-pop spectacles such as “Dreams Tonite”, “Plimsoll Pumps” and “Not My Baby”-

As eloquently rated “A light 8 out of 10” by Anthony Fantano, you’ll most definitely want to catch this super band live!

unnamed (1)Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi completes the double-bill lineup, with her ever fantastic grooves and soothing vocals!

As a prelude to Unlimited Grooves Festival by U Mobile, the pre-party featuring Alvvays and Zee Avi will be held at Chin Woo Stadium.

To attend the pre-party, you’ll have to flash your  Unlimited Grooves Festival by U Mobile tickets or buy tickets via www.galactix.asia below.

2. Boy Pablo LIVE in Malaysia!

Norwegian-Chilean indie-pop phenomenon Boy Pablo made waves on the internet last year with the release of his hit single “Everytime”, with his dreamy, shoegaze sound and drawling vocals that set in stone this generation’s voice, garnering over 13 million views as of late!

A fresh face to the indie scene, he’s since released his other singles “Sick Feeling”, “Feeling Lonely” and “Losing You” that have consecutively stolen hearts from fans worldwide.

unnamed (2)His first EP “Roy Pablo” that was released in 2017 paved the way towards his music’s success that would then change up things for his career a year later. Now with the release of his second EP titled “Soy Pablo” this year, Boy Pablo certainly doesn’t disappoint with his signature melancholic yet sunny bravado on this 7-track masterpiece!

Boy Pablo takes Malaysia for the first time on 21st of November at The Bee Publika!

General tickets go on sale on www.galactix.asia on 1 Nov.

3. Aina Abdul ‘Shadow’ Music Video Premiere and Showcase

Aina Abdul is no stranger to Malaysia’s music scene.

She’s an up-and-coming powerhouse vocalist hailing from Seremban, who came into the limelight after becoming first runner-up to TV3’s singing competition show, ‘Mentor’, under the apprenticeship of rock legend Ella, in 2015! Since then, Aina has won an international vocalist award, performed in reputable Jazz festivals, and was also featured in ‘Tombiruo: Penunggu Rimba’s’ theme song.

unnamed (3)Now, Aina is making her Urbanscapes debut with a music video release party of her latest single, ‘Shadow,’ and a live performance with special guests; Kuizz & Q Sound on the 15th of November 2018 at The Bee, Publika!

She believes in originality and that creating her own sound would inspire listeners with her story. Modern R&B and Soul are her favorite genres and she cites Chrisette Michele, Ledisi, Yuna, and Tegan and Sara as sources of inspiration!

For tickets to the show, DM the artist on Instagram.

4. The Jack It! Series: Urbanscapes Edition

After a two year run of open mics, Jack It! is here for another event – this time, however, it will be on Urbanscapes homeground, to celebrate art and friends and the very part where the city sprung out from!

unnamed (5)Having its humble beginnings at the late Minut Init in 2017, Jack-It eventually found itself a home at Intunnation, TTDI and have since incorporated more than just open-mics to full-fledged events featuring poets, musicians, and bands alike!

The night features four bands and three poets of various genres; Shoegaze outfit Shuuna, Ipoh-bred Radiowave, folk brothers Mafidz and KL indie-slacker rockers Ian F. & Court 10! The poetry line-up includes Muhammad Zhafir, Kimchi Lai and Umar Azizi!
