MALAYSIAN SHORT FILM ‘MY BA’S RADIO’ WINS BEST SHORT FILM IN ITALY

The story was inspired by true events, the director’s late father. In the film, the actual radio could be seen making an appearance in one of the scenes. The film was shot in the director’s late father’s childhood home which was built 60 years ago and has in-built passages to hide children during the Malaysian race riots of 1963.

 

Malaysian Short Film entitle My Ba‟s Radio, 爸的回想曲 (Chinese title) was chosen the Best Film in Mantova Lovers Short Film Festival last 8 March 2019.

The 10 minutes duration film directed by Victor Chen Yee Fei (25) beat out other 1,500 submissions from around the world at the inaugural Italian film festival which took place at Cinema del Carbone in Mantua, Italy.

Previously the film won first runner-up from the Hypp TV reality show “I Want to be a Filmmaker” and the grand prize winner of the Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition 2016. Since then, the film has travelled to film festivals like Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2017 in Japan, Asian World Film Festival in USA and other film festivals in France, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.

Some of Chen’s previous affiliations were with Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, Imagica SEA, and Platform BUSAN under Busan International Film Festival.’

The film which was completed 1 st March, 2017 is about a son who attempted to reconnect with his grieving father whose coping mechanism after losing his wife by listening to a radio. . The film was produced within Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition 2016, under the mentorship of filmmakers, Yasu and Bea Tanaka from 42nd Pictures and the sponsorship of equipment and camera Panasonic AG-DVX200 by Panasonic Malaysia.
