Lisa Swerling was born in Cape Town, South Africa. She later moved to the UK and went on to study politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford University. Her husband, Ralph Lazar, grew up in Johannesburg and was educated in Cape Town and London. He studied law and economics at the University of Cape Town and the London School of Economics.
