EVER wished upon a star for relatable Disney characters? Imagine, for example, Aladdin in a turban, Cinderella in a cheongsam, or Queen Elsa in a baju kurung fully decked out in traditional jewellery!
Well, we’re almost there — Tumblr user Let There Be Doodles (LTBD) introduced a whole new world of race-bent Disney princesses with his mean photoshop skills, and we may be one step closer to our own Malaysian Disney princess now that these images have gone viral.
The illustrator of these images however received mixed feedback. Detractors blamed him for reverse racism, stereotyping cultures and altering characters that were part of history.
LTBD addressed all these allegations in a post, disappointed that he couldn’t express his love for these iconic characters without being subjected to public scrutiny.
My goal has been to work with all of the major Disney women, since I love their designs and simply wanted to add a twist to each character. I have not focused solely on any specific category or race of character, I simply want to work with all of my favorite Disney women.
I am not trying to erase the originals, I love the originals, and altering a few lines and colors on an image will not change their stories and the fact that they exist. It’s simply fan art.
LTBD plays with a diverse range of ethnicities which we absolutely love — just look at Indian Ariel and Middle-Eastern Megara for instance. As such, we dare you to make your own Malaysian version of these Disney characters and tweet them to @thedailyseni!
Check out these stunning manipulations and tell us what you think in the meantime.
