Bicara Titian Budaya last Saturday saw a panel discussion take place in the morning, right after the Malaysian premiere of award-winning Singaporean play Serunding. Boasting theatre-makers Claire Wong and Jo Kukathas, as well as Singaporean poet Gwee Li Sui and local author Uthaya Sankar SB, the panel was themed Stories Without Borders.
LAST Saturday, Bicara Titian Budaya began with a delectable treat — Singaporean stage play Serunding premiered in the morning to Malaysian audiences five years after it first won the Open Category of the 24 Hour Playwriting Competition.
Five years ago, a one-woman play took the Open Category of the 24-Hour Playwriting Competition by storm with its hilarious, truthful and heartbreaking depiction of a Singaporean mother. Serunding was a 40-minute play which spoke in words beyond its author’s years — then 23-year old National Institute of Education undergraduate Ahmad Musta’ain Bin Khamis.
