It’s been a week of artistic fulfillment and creative exchanges in JB this week, and now Johor Bahru: International Festival City (JB:IFC) ends with a blast with the inaugural edition of Spectrum: Music Festival as the closing event of the 14th Johor Bahru Arts Festival 2017, which will take place on 18 November 2017 from 6.00 PM onwards at The ViBe, Vantage Bay.
Spectrum merges urban music and visual arts in this great big party that celebrates the spectrum of colours in discovery while stimulating all our senses. Spectrum: Music Festival will showcase home-grown up-and-comings and they will be performing alongside artistes from various parts of the world! There’s Vienna-based electronic duo Mynth, who will be performing in Johor Bahru for the first time and headlining the festival, straight from their appearance at the IMI Festival 2017 in Singapore. Also featured in the line-up is Singaporean band M1LDL1FE (formerly known as Take Two) who have opened for venerable acts like Walk the Moon, Travis, and Death Cab for Cutie, where they bring less hard-hitting electronica, and bringing in your dreamier versions of alternative soul. We also have the merciless and banging beats of DuriO, cofounder of the all-girl collective ATTAGIRL! together with verse-and-prose-acrobat, rapper Kayczar who’ll be bringing his classics like Talk About You/Punctuation – showing his worth of melding jazzy sounds and street antics in his lyricism and flow.
When it comes to festivals, it’s more than just about the artists performing, but how everything comes together. The magician behind the curation is Johor Bahru-based musician Shelhiel, who has actively collaborated with Johor Bahru: International Festival City (JB:IFC) since his debut performance at the festival in 2015. In his own work, Shelhiel puts psychedelic ambience into its sound, painting this world of serenity and suspense simultaneously in tracks like Oceans on his Soundcloud. He will be the prism that concentrates all the wavelengths of music and milieu into one. Other emerging music artistes set to appear for Spectrum: Music Festival are Kh/rl, Haze, and Nirmala.
And no good soundscape is complete without a complete visual landscape. Johorean visual artist Flex flexes his creative muscles to bring an environment of celebration like no other. He’s got a
track record to show it, with involvement in the industry and development including visual and projection mapping projects for clientele such as Hermes, Johnny Walker, Mercedes, Porsche, and Adidas. Joining him on the visual front are local artists/collectives Dose and Thinkabout, who also bring their own style and pizzazz into the mix.
Event passes at the door are RM 80.00. For more info check out bit.ly/spectrummusicfest.
