Say the word ‘sports’ or ‘exercise’ and images of the outdoors float into your mind. There are recent debates saying that both adults and children alike have too much screen time and too little sun time, which translate to the lack of exercise. Of course, getting some vitamin D every now and then is important for mental health, but we should not dismiss the fact that it is possible to combine exercise with screen time.

Exergaming, a term used to denote video games that incorporate exercise into its gameplay, relies on technology that tracks body movement or reaction to achieve goals within the game. Research has indicated that exergaming can produce real improvements in fitness. Since it’s done indoors, exergaming is weatherproof and provides a great alternative to supplement your regular routine on rainy days.


Cycology

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned cyclist looking to improve your techniques, CYCOLOGY at Glo Damansara caters to every fitness level with its one of a kind indoor cycling experience. Unlike the typical RPM classes that measure workout by time elapsed or calories burnt, CYCOLOGY’s fitness training is measured by power output.

The classes focus on assessing your power output using Functional Threshold Power (FTP) and results synced straight into the BodyBike app that is synced to the BodyBike Smart+ bikes used in the CycoSpin studio. The board not only weighs you, but will keep a record of your weight loss and exercise improvements as time goes by.

Your fitness journey with the Wii Fit involves filling out fitness journals weight logs through completing yoga, strength training, aerobics, and balance game challenges. The best part about Wii Fit is that the gameplay is extremely interactive and engaging that it doesn’t feel like exercising. This made Wii Fit a huge hit among individuals and fitness newbies looking for creative ways to jumpstart an active lifestyle.

Oculus Rift / HTC Vive

Strap some weights to your body and play your favourite high activity game in Virtual Reality (VR) using consoles such as Oculus Rift or HTC Vive if you want to make exercise feel less like work and more like fun. These consoles are virtual reality headsets that completely immerse you inside virtual worlds and you must fully engage your limbs, jump, crouch, or punch to survive the gameplay.

Some of our favourites are: Soundboxing, a VR music video kickboxing game where you complete challenges by punching to the beat of your favourite music videos. The longer your streak of correct punches, and the stronger you punch, the more points you’ll earn; and Holopoint, an archery game where you fight your way through waves of responsive targets, samurai, and highly dangerous ninjas – all while drawing, nocking, and shooting your arrows as quickly as possible.

As Malaysia’s first Hyper Reality Entertainment centre, EXA combines excitement and physical dexterity in an exclusive four-player space exploration mission to called ‘Dimension 12’ to subdue hostile aliens. Hyper Reality Entertainment is a VR concept by EXA Global that markets itself as the next-level VR experience as it includes real-life sensations such as temperature change to add a depth of realism.

You will be given an untethered backpack setup, multi-user motion capture system, VR headsets, headphones and a gun where you can move freely without being strapped to wires. Within a big space, you will have to walk, crouch, shoot, and jump to move your virtual avatar within the world of Dimension 12. Trust us, you will be exhausted and breathless by the end of the game.

Laser Tag

Engage in the adrenaline-inducing, challenging yet fun indoor sport of laser tag. Yes, you might never have considered laser tag as a workout but ten minutes of the game can leave you in exhaustion. Somewhat similar to paintball sans the stinging pellets, laser tag is an extremely exciting and interactive game.

You will only be equipped with a special battle vest and a Laser gun within an air-conditioned and glow-in-the-dark arena filled with obstacles and hiding places. Besides getting a good workout (and probably a scream fest), laser tag also trains your agility and accuracy. Now that sounds like fun!
