Red Hong Yi: The Shanghai-Based Malaysian Artist Who Does Celebrity Portraits The Unorthodox Way

by Tharany M.July 1, 2015

Red Hong Yi is a Malaysian artist and architect who is known for creating portraits of famous people using bizzare materials – there is no such thing as a paintbrush in her world of art.

She is currently in Shanghai, where she divides her time between creating new works, speaking at conferences and universities, committing to various commercial projects and managing Studio Hong Yi, which was founded in January 2013.

After graduating with a degree in architecture from Australia, Red took a job at the Shanghai office of an architecture firm. She fell in love with the city’s topsy-turvy ways and was inspired by the affordable things she could get at the market.

Her first work was a portrait of Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei made entirely out of sunflower seeds.

She did many other portraits through other brilliant methods: she created a portrait of Jay Chou using coffee stain rings and even went on to create images of Adele, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jackie Chan.
