AKIM & THE MAJISTRET took home Lagu Terbaik for their smash hit “Portret” at Anugerah Juara Lagu ke-30 last Sunday. The band, led by former Akademi Fantasia contestant Akim, exploded on the scene last year with a series of successful singles and milestones, including weeks at the top of local music charts with “Portret”.
Lyrics to the song was written by Akim’s brother, first-time songwriter Afham Zulhusmi. In a brief interview with Utusan Online immediately after their big win, Afham claimed that penning words to the song took more or less five minutes.
“I needed no more than five minutes because the story was already there, based on my personal experience in a religious school,” he stated to members of the media.
According to Afham, who goes by the pen-name of Kamar Empayar, the song revolved around a former religious teacher he idolised. A teacher based in Melaka, Afham has great interest in music and writing, which culminated in his debut songwriting attempt on “Portret”.
Eleven songs were nominated for the coveted Lagu Terbaik award, including Faizal Tahir‘s “Assalamualaikum”, Elizabeth Tan‘s “Knock Knock” and Stacy‘s “Not For Sale”.
The awards ceremony celebrates the best of Malay-language music and was aired on Media Prima Berhad‘s free station TV3, known for their controversial soap operas.
