Lo And Behold! There’s A Brand New Performance Space In Town!

by Tania KnuttSeptember 10, 2015

Behold everybody, for there’s a new venue in town!

We’re talking about Playspace Live located right at the heart of Damansara Perdana in PJ; which for the past few years has been a favorite enclave of urban creative types of all stripes. The funky neighborhood has even more recently had the makings of coming into a full bloom as a one-stop, go-to artists’ hub what with music stores and recording studios, production houses and design offices steadily populating the area.

Anticipating this glorious (all fingers-crossed) blooming as well is Playspace, which opened just last Wednesday by taking us on a special 40-minute musical journey, as described by Playspace co-founder Cathy Chin. The performance was no doubt a musical journey, complete with narration courtesy of the oh-so fabulous Edwin Sumun!

The talented Anna Chong and Foo Chie Haur on flute kick started the launch with a Mongolian song.

The grand launch showcase featured illustrious local singers like Junji Delfino, Reza Salleh, Joy Victor, Anna Chong and Nikki Palikat who took us from the swinging blues through to the funk of the 70’s, the eargasms of the 80’s, to grunge from the 90’s up until the hottest contemporary sounds and we must say – nostalgia never felt so good.

And how do we not compliment the ensemble of musicians which made audiences feel like they were sitting at a Rolling Stones concert? We’re talking hot redhead bassist, musical director and Playspace co-founder Melina William, along with David Tebari on guitar, Omar Ibrahim on drums, Sharon Chong on keys and Zalila Lee on percussion. Honestly, there couldn’t have been a better ensemble of musicians to christen this new space.

Joy Victor and her ‘fro took us back to Funky Town.

Nikki Palikat ended the launch with songs from the millennial.

So what’s truly special about Playspace?

  1. Their sound system. For an intimate venue, it’s particularly great for rock gigs and acoustic performances. As mentioned above, being there during the launch was akin to being in a full-blown rock show!
  2. Great lighting. Have you seen the pictures we’ve put up on this page?
  3. The space. It’s not exceedingly done up and not too small either; the venue is sizable enough for quality concert experiences and intimate enough to accommodate soirees between 100 to 150 audience members.
  4. Playspace Live is pretty much a multifaceted space. In addition to catering perfectly for music gigs and showcases, the black box concept means it’s versatile enough for theatre performances, media events, press conferences, visual exhibitions and formal functions.

From the performances to the musicians, to the world-class strobe lights and top notch sound, the launch brought the house down and there ain’t no better way to bless a space. A big kudos to the team behind it all! Support your local creative community, God knows it’s about damn time!
