Chart Chat: Juvana 3 concludes acclaimed trilogy on high note at local box office!

by The Daily SeniOctober 6, 2016

HOW often do you get sequels to decent local films? What about decent sequels to local films?

Trilogies are in this season as Juvana 3 soared to the Top 5 of the local box office last week with well over RM600,000 in collections. Debuting at #4, below only Hollywood blockbusters Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, Deepwater Horizon and The Magnificent Seven, Juvana 3 was the highest charting local film release of last week. It also had the highest per theatre average which suggests strong occupancy in cinemas across the nation.

The film has since crossed the RM1,000,000 mark at the box office and looks set to exceed Aliff Dalam 7 Dimensi by the time it finishes. That could potentially be two or three weeks away, as the film is down only five screens in its second week, playing in 68 cinemas as of today — great hold for a local movie!

According to FilemKita, the film by Faisal Ishak is the best local performer in the second half of 2016. Just one week into its run, Juvana 3 has already amassed more than Juvana 2: Terperangkap Dalam Kebebasan‘s total collection. It remains to be seen if the film can match the outstanding performance of the first film in the franchise, Juvana.

Other local films charting last week include local Tamil release Geethaiyin Raadhai and Metrowealth‘s latest horror release Volkswagen Kuning. Both films entered their third week yesterday, and should end with approximately RM360,000 and RM820,000 respectively. Meanwhile, Aliff Dalam 7 Dimensi concluded its run last week with slightly more than RM1.4 million in total after four weeks in cinemas.

But back to sequels and trilogies: local production house Grand Brilliance returns with Mamat Khalid‘s famous Rock series in three weeks time. Forming the final installment of an highly-influential franchise, Rock Bro! is generating a lot more buzz on social media than releases debuting in cinemas this week such as Mat Moto Otai.

We’ll be back with more news on that, but in the meantime let’s congratulate the Juvana team for successfully creating one of the most iconic homegrown film series we’ve had. Enjoy the trailer for all three films below and read about them in our previous coverage!
