If You’re Searching For What Makes Malaysian Pop Art, Fear Not! Gavin Yap Is Doing The Same.

by Tania KnuttAugust 22, 2015

After suceeding as an actor, writer and director, Gavin Yap can now add another profession onto his resume – art curator.

ARE WE LOST: A Search For Malaysian Pop Art is an art exhibition that Gavin will be curating during the weekend and is one that can’t be missed. Bringing together an eclectic group of artists from the local scene, the showcase that will be highlighting some unique visual perspectives of Malaysian pop art.

Gavin is an avid poster collector and he had always wanted to do an exhibition like this. After some research on the history of art for a play he did in Singapore, he eventually got more and more interested in the creative field. However, his main interest had always been geared towards popular culture and nostalgic throwbacks in the 70’s till the 90’s.

Six of our local artist – Sandra Khoo, Kenji Chair, Lefty, Michael Chuah, Zamzami M. Zaim and Katun – will come up with an incredible series of limited edition posters and original paintings which have been inspired by Malaysia’s rich history of folklore and urban legends. Among the things to expect? How about a humorous mash-up of Star Wars characters re-imagined as everyday Malaysians?

Gavin admitted that he hadn’t met most of these artists before his upcoming show and that the search to get this little collective was a pretty long one. He had known Sandra from the animation world, and Lefty was someone who he had tried to work with a while back but wasn’t able to due to some unspecified circumstances. After the idea for this show appeared, Gavin brought Lefty on board and introduced him to Michael and Kenji who stunned him with their work. As for Katun and Zamzami, Gavin has the internet to thank for them.

Be it with serious art collectors or people who have never been to an art exhibition or showcase in their lives, Gavin believes Malaysian pop  culture is something that is current and has potential to connect with everyone. Gavin goes as far as to say that incorporating pop culture into Malaysian art is an endless endeavour.

So, what is Malaysian pop culture in Gavin’s eyes?
