Popular drinking destination Asian Heritage Row was last seen undergoing serious cosmetic procedure when The Daily Seni dropped by earlier last year. Half cosy food and beverage outlets, half construction site protected by high zinc walls, the place was a far cry from its peak form during the last decade.
This intersection of Jalan Doraisamy and Jalan Sultan Ismail now boasts The Row, an elegant terrace of brick and glass hosting a number of upmarket dining and shopping spaces.
Developers, Urbanspace removed “Asian Heritage” from the name of the place and rightfully so: there was nothing about the troubled street — once plagued by violent crime from bar-goers — which reflected Malaysian culture.
Helping to get the place back into the hearts of locals and tourists is Slate Weekend, held from 30 – 31 January.
Featuring a range of workshops and activities, Slate Weekend launches the newly-completed North Block.
Situated opposite Quill City Mall, it’s worth noting that The Row also boasts its own event space. Dubbed Slate @ The Row, this space deems itself “a blank slate for any event” and is a 3,300 square feet fully-equipped warehouse suitable for any sort of event from gigs to exhibitions.
As part of Slate Weekend, tenants at The Row will be organising little events and workshops — Ohsum Mossum will be teaching participants about terrariums (RM150), while mother-and-daughter teams can head over to florist BudsbyIlyana for a bouquet handling workshop (RM100).
Those looking for a bit of non-committal fun can go around playing games (there’s “Giant Jenga” for example) and listen to busking musicians, or even have a look at products by local, independent entrepeneurs.
