Alyah to do Secretaries Week, Announces New Music!

by Deric EctMarch 19, 2015

At this moment, we are 282 metres above ground level and surrounded by views overlooking the city.

The venue is Atmosphere360, the highest restaurant in South East Asia. It is one of few in the world that revolves, allowing patrons to look at all of Kuala Lumpur in a 90-minute sitting.

Singer Alyah is about to begin her press conference. She’s clad in black, with a white and gold head scarf complimented with chunky silver jewellery.

Alyah has been recording for around fifteen years although she doesn’t look a day past 30. She recently enjoyed a huge resurgence in interest due to the song “Sesal Separuh Nyawa”, a winner in the pop category at last year’s Anugerah Industri Muzik as well as a nominee at the 29th Anugerah Juara Lagu.

“Sesal Separuh Nyawa” is still battling it out in the local music charts one year on. Written by Alyah herself and Shah Shamsiri, the song has garnered more than 2 million views on Youtube to date.

“”Sesal Separuh Nyawa” was just 20% me, 80% Shah Shamisiri!” she modestly corrects us.

Alyah is here today to officially announce her involvement with Atmosphere 360’s Secretaries Week program. Taking place on the 20th of April, ‘An Enchanted Hi Tea With Alyah’ is set to contain a lot more than just the standard performance and signings.

“This is my first time [doing Secretaries Week]. Yang saya boleh katakan, sesuatu yang istimewa menunggu pada 20hb April ini. Nak tahu apa dia, tak boleh cakap sekarang lah, nanti boss marah. Banyak sangat, mesti terkejut you all nanti.”

At the conference, Dee of Jangan Ketawa fame asked attendees to makan ubat jantung sebelum datang because the surprises will be phenomenal. Dee, real name Syed Muradzi Shamsul, is a regular face during Secretaries Week. The sought-after emcee will be emceeing on the 20th as well.

One of the many surprises will be the premiere of Alyah’s upcoming single.

“20hb nanti, my new single akan didengarkan untuk siapa yang hadir nanti. That song sepenuhnya lirik daripada Alyah, based on my true story, my experiences before.”

Titled “Syurga”, the song is composed by Omar K. with lyrics entirely written by Alyah.

As a singer, Alyah wishes she could play musical instruments but lacks the skill. On the occasion that she writes music, she relies on humming. She has big plans ahead of her though.

“Now I tengah belajar how to produce lagu with my best friend, Alfie (from Tiga),” she tells us. “Tapi kita tak pandai main music. But I’m lucky because I can sing.”

It’s been a long time since Alyah released an album. Her last record was a self-titled release in 2008 which boasted the hit single “Tak Mungkin Kerna Sayang”.

The good news however is that one is in the works and it is almost done.

“Sekarang tinggal satu lagu lagi because that song is composed by Alfie but arranged by Jamie Ching. Jamie Ching sangat sibuk sebab dia travel, so I kena tunggu dia. Hopefully end of this month I dapat habiskan dan inshaallah before puasa, album penuh Alyah akan keluar.”

“Dari 8 tahun lepas, I takde [solo] album, just single, single, single. Setiap kali keluar single, keluar cerita, keluar single, keluar cerita. So for this album I decided untuk letak tajuk something like ‘My Journey’ or ‘Kisah Alyah’; something about me.”

Looking back at her discography, successes and awards, it’s clear that Alyah’s fortune lies in ballads.

“Sebenarnya memang tak dinafikan dekat Malaysia ballad adalah genre yang pertama yang disukai. To me I lebih suka fast beats [but] I tak boleh syok sendiri. Sometimes I kena communicate dengan market dan fans jugak. Malaysians memang suka ballad.”

“I tak boleh menolak,” she concludes with a smile, “that’s the reality dengan industry kat Malaysia.”
