#13BCAA: Audience choice open for votes, theatre category slightly more inclusive

by The Daily SeniApril 9, 2016

THE 13th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards has opened its voting page for the Audience Choice Awards category as of Friday, 8 April.

The awards ceremony, founded by performing arts advocates Kakiseni in 2002, will be held on 24 April and see top honours in the nation’s performing arts industry go out to dance, music, theatre and musical theatre performed in the previous year.

Judges for the Theatre category for this year’s BOH Cameronian Arts Awards are National Academy of Arts Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) lecturer Wong Oi Min, Universiti Malaya lecturer Roselina Johari Md Khir, theatre performer and educator Leow Puay Tin, actor Mano Maniam, and writer Moo Siew Keh.

A total of 23 productions are eligible in the category, which includes Theatrethreesixty‘s Love and Information and Angels in America. Surprisingly, the company’s productions — even young playwright Ariff Kamil‘s well-received original English/Sabahan play How I Learnt To Accept Reality By Sleeping Through It (Anak/Benih) — were snubbed in major awards categories.

Aside from nominees popular among judges, smaller theatre productions such as Sisi Seni‘s Skandal Lepas Mati and Anomalist Production‘s Bangsa are among those eligible to receive audience votes. Last year’s significant winners Revolution Stage also scores a mention with their Remy Ishak and Nadia Aqilah-led Sekuntum Mawar Merah.

Elsewhere, Singapore makes a strong impression in its 50th year of bilateral ties with Malaysia — W!ld Rice‘s Another Country and the Kuo Pao Kun‘s original 1985 script The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole can be found in the drop-down list of nominees.

To register your vote, head over to the voting page and select your favourite productions, then confirm via email.
